Cats love balconies: sun, birds, breeze. But cats also misjudge jumps, chase pigeons and squeeze through gaps that look far too small. Falls from balconies are common enough that vets have a name for them: high-rise syndrome. Here is how to keep your balcony pet-friendly and safe.
Why normal railings are not enough for cats
- Cats can slip through railing gaps that would stop a toddler.
- They can jump onto the top rail and walk along it.
- A bird landing on the ledge can trigger an instant leap.
Dogs are different: small breeds slip through gaps, and larger dogs may lean over a low railing.
Step 1: Close every gap, including the sides
Look at the whole opening, not just the front. The side gaps between railing and wall, and the space under the railing, are the usual escape routes.
Step 2: Go above the railing
Cats climb and jump, so protection should go above the railing, ideally up to the ceiling. Invisible grills do this without blocking the view: thin 316 stainless steel cables run from the ceiling down to the railing or floor.
Step 3: Use tighter spacing
For cats, cable spacing needs to be tighter than for a typical child-safety installation, and the side edges need to be sealed along the walls. Tell your installer you have cats so they plan the spacing for them.
Step 4: Consider a low mesh for puppies and kittens
Very young kittens and small puppies can be tiny. A low mesh along the base of the grill for the first few months adds extra peace of mind.
Step 5: Keep the balcony boring for climbing
Just like with children, move furniture and planters away from the edge so there is no launch point.
Step 6: Check chewing habits
The steel core of an invisible grill cable is very strong, but a dog that chews constantly may mark the outer coating. Training, or a low guard where the dog likes to chew, solves this.
FAQ
Can a cat get through invisible grills?
With standard spacing a small cat may, so for cats we use tighter spacing and seal the side edges.
Do invisible grills stop pigeons?
They discourage larger birds but are not a pigeon net. Ask about combining them if pigeons are frequent visitors.
Is it safe for pets to walk on the balcony floor after installation?
Yes. After installation we clean up drilling dust and check for any sharp offcuts.
